New York City To Homeless: Choose Public Shelters Or The Streets…

The city of New York has yet again displayed that the purpose of government is to expand the power of government rather than to provide the best service to the governed.

According to a report from CBS:

City officials have ordered 22 New York churches to stop providing beds to homeless people.

With temperatures well below freezing early Saturday, the churches must obey a city rule requiring faith-based shelters to be open at least five days a week — or not at all.

He said hundreds of people now won’t have a place to sleep.

The Department of Homeless Services said the city offers other shelters with the capacity to accept all those who have been sleeping in the churches. The city had 8,000 beds waiting.

So what we have here is the city government denying charities the opportunity to serve the homeless UNLESS the charities do so under the city’s terms…terms which make no sense and represent benefit only for the government and not for the community.

The homeless are being denied the right to choose the best care for themselves and their families because the government of the city of New York feels it is better suited to make those choices rather than leaving the choice to the people themselves.  This is yet another case of the government assuming that citizens are too stupid to make reasonable decisions for themselves and thus forces its will on the governed.

That’s not democracy.  That’s not freedom.

Way to go city of New York.  And way to go, Michael Bloomberg - the mayor who is restricting the right of churches to aid the homeless.  What’s wrong?  Are you afraid that the churches will do a better job caring for the homeless than the city?  Are you concerned that the churches will also do more good with less money than the city requires?

Of course you’re concerned about those things.  Because there are very few things that the government does better than the private sector.  And running charitable services certainly isn’t one of them.

Congratulations, New York City:  You’re headed to a third term of Bloomberg, who clearly doesn’t even trust you.
